Although optimistic, George is not fully convinced that female bodies are tough enough for participation in what he considers to be a ârough male-sportâ. His support of female rugby is, accordingly, constrained. The interviewees, as George illustrated, often singled out the anatomically distinct parts of the female body, with respect to expressing concerns about female participation in rugby. Kahu, for example, stated: âYes, I am a little worried about women getting hurt. For example, their bodily functions, their breasts and that, you know, thereâs a high risk of injuryâ. Edgar, as a research scientist at a medical school, conveyed a more clinical but nevertheless similar sentiment:
I donât know the evidence whether women [who play rugby] are at risk of damaging their ability to have children and whether they are aware of that, if that is the case. That would be my major concern, is that they are unaware, because they are different anatomies theyâre not males, they have to carry a pregnancy for nine months and males donât. So I would be concerned about that . . . there has to be a realisation that men and women are different and to accept differences rather than to pretend that there arenât differences when there really are, I think thatâs a lie. . . . But if they want to, if itâs acceptable for males, if there is no injury that can come to them, other than ones that already exist, then Iâm happy for womenâs rugby.
